Internship Resume Startup

Okay, I just read on techcrunch about a startup that does resumes. Could be cool, but to me, it seems the same as visualcv. Let me know what you think.

When most people are faced with the task of building their resume, they fire up Microsoft Word, trudge through a few generic looking templates, and export their page to HTML. Usually this results in something that’s either boring, weird looking (because of formatting issues), or just plain ugly. JobSpice, a new startup that’s launching tonight, is looking to help users build web-friendly resumes that are as good looking as they are easy to customize.

I am interested to see if this takes off. This is clearly a space that lots of startups are interested in. We shall see. Team seems uber-smart, but at face value, this product falls short.

It's is always a great idea to review your internship resume. An internship resume review can help you correct simple mistakes and better yet, done properly, it can get you feedback from hiring managers. Getting feedback about your internship resume from hiring managers is a big deal. It is vitally important because the 3 seconds they spend looking at your resume means everything.

I would like to let you guys know about an internship resume review site called razume.com. It isn't only for internship resumes (all resumes), but it's a very cool idea. You can also tell that they have significantly invested in the user interface because the software is very easy to use.

The site is literally this simple: black out your name, upload your internship resume, and then send it off to people for review. The only problem that I see with the site is that they don't have a reason for people to review your internship resume. What this means is that you should use it for personal feedback not feedback from the masses.

Internship Resume Shouldn't Be The Focus

As we saw from the last article, your internship resume just isn't that important because it is rarely what gets you the internship. So what does lead to getting noticed for an internship? Largely, it is who you know. Whether that makes sense or not, who cares? It is what happens.

So, your internship search strategy must change accordingly. Internship resumes really don't mean that much, so quit focusing on it. Focus on what means everything - who you know. Then create strategies to expand this number of people so that you land your internship.

If the number one way people get jobs is through referrals, you think that they would work as hard as they can on referrals. Yet, this often does not happen because it is uncomfortable. It is easier to sit in from of a computer screen and type out your resume than go met strangers and say things that are so compelling that they tell HR - you must hire this person. Focus on the tool that is going to yield more results - who you know.

Why Have An Internship Resume?

Why? If you have done things that are truly remarkable, your resume is just an afterthought. Why, on earth, would you spend so much time on your internship resume when it won't get you the job. Internship resumes never land internships, great students land internships.

The point of an internship resume is to get an internship interview. It is that simple, but people fail to see resumes as just a tool, instead they see it as the end goal. It doesn't make any sense to spend all your time producing a document that just doesn't do anything. Recruiters will look at your resume for just a couple seconds before viewing the next. Why spend time on your internship  when you can spend time building stuff that that gets you noticed for your internship. Why not start a blog or newsletter or something else crazy that we can't even think about right now.

Internship resumes are not the end goal, don't ever forget this. Why do you even have one? Great people don't need resumes because people know them based on what they can do, not how well they format a piece of paper. We get so caught up in the tools that we forget the end goal. And if one tool isn't working, try another, it is that simple. If your internship resume isn't leading anywhere, go work on your internship cover letter.

There is a difference between the tools and the end house. It is as if we spend all our time worried about whether we should use a hammer or a nail gun instead of how we will build the house.

One of the biggest misconceptions about internship resumes is that they have to follow a strict guideline.  We get questions about how to standout on internship resumes all of the time.  I’ll admit, you don’t have quite as much freedom as you do on your internship resume, but you have enough freedom to make people want to meet you.  That’s right.  Your internship resume can not only provide the basics about yourself, but it can also serve the same goal of your internship cover letter by making employers want to meet you.

Sure, you have to cover the basics in your internship resume.  You have to list your education, GPA, work history, extracurricular activities, etc.  But you don’t have to pack your descriptions full of action verbs and vague sentences about success.  If you are typing a description of a past internship and have three bullet points for it, put a little humor in one of them (as long as it’s relevant).  People like creative.  People like funny.  That’s how things spread.  And I guarantee you no one else is doing this in their internship resume.

This reminds me of a story my finance professor told me about an internship resume he received when he was on the job.  The internship resume was from a candidate that one of his office members knew.  Everything on this guys resume seemed pretty standard.  In fact, he had a 4.0 GPA, and my professor said he wasn’t going to hire them because he thinks there’s something off in people who maintain a 4.0 GPA. 

But in the work history of the internship resume, the candidate said he worked as a bouncer in a bar during college.  The guy in the office who knew him said he was about five feet eight inches tall and weighed about a hundred and fifty pounds.  My professor said, “I have to meet this guy.”

During the interview, my professor said he found out that the candidate great.  He found out that he was a black belt in jiu-jitsu.  They hired the candidate.

All because this candidate wrote a great internship resume.  An internship resume that made his future employers say, “We have to meet this guy.”
